I went to Dzibilchaltún today for the equinox. Dzibilchaltún is pronounced Ts’íibil Cháaltun in Maya.

It was made so the sunrise on the equinoxes come right thru the arch. And because of that it’s busy on those days.

TripAdvisor website says it open at 8am but due to the equinox it really opened at 5am on 21, 22 and 23rd of September 2019. Local told me that is the normal schedule for equinoxes.

It’s just north of Merida and a nice day trip, or even just morning trip. I would recommend two hours to see it all and coming at sunrise for the equinox is the best time of course.

During this equinox special time backpacks and towels are not allowed. Only a plastic bag with a phone or camera and a bottle of water.

Plus the cenote was closed during the equinoxes due to the crowds and it was a Monday and the museum is closed every Monday.

I enjoyed seeing the place for the first time and will be coming back again when not crowed due to the equinox.
